Emma Kalfus on Creativity, Career and Unconditional Love
Honouring the many facets of motherhood this Mother’s Day, we sat down with editor and stylist Emma Kalfus, to explore the ebb and flow of being a mum, and the beauty of a love that knows no bounds.
When she’s not editing independent magazine SIDE-NOTE, writing for the likes of Vogue and Elle or styling fashion shoots (including our Mother’s Day campaign), Emma Kalfus is a devoted mother to two beautiful children—Liv and Jacob.
In a candid interview with SARAH & SEBASTIAN, shot by Phoebe Wolfe, Emma wears some of her favourite pieces from our collection including our bold Diamond Medusa Hoops and Suspense Bangles, with five-year-old daughter, Liv, beaming in her arms.
Ahead of Mother's Day, we spoke to Emma on set about how she balances motherhood with a formidable career, the grounding influence of nature, and her “unimaginable” pride for her children.
How do you naturally express love to Liv and Jacob?
I try to start each day with the biggest of smiles (and continue to ensure they get smiles every time I see them) and end the day with cuddles, stories and affirmations. I really want to build my kids into independent and secure people, and I truly think that all starts from birth.
How has your own mother influenced the way you show love?
I always felt like she was 'the goal' I aspired to be as a mother, and that she just naturally had motherhood all figured out. But after having kids of my own, I've learnt that she also felt the same way as I did—experiencing all the ups and downs. I still feel like she is a level above my standard, and I just feel incredibly lucky to have her as my own.
Emma wears the Diamond Medusa Hoops & Ear Cuff. Liv wears the Lunette Bracelet.

Is there a piece of jewellery that reminds you of your mum? What about one that makes you think of Liv and Jacob?
My mum has always worn white gold bold ball stud earrings, which I recently borrowed and brought back to Sydney with me. I think I need to get a set of my own.
How has spending time in nature with your children shaped your bond as a family?
We spend almost every waking moment outdoors and try to chase summer as much as possible. I can't wait to get my son on a surfboard so that we can start going on surf trips as a family.
What do you think nature teaches children about life in a way nothing else can?
Nature definitely teaches them about the circle of life. It's refreshing to see Liv and Jacob's minds taking in new things and having what feels so normal to us as adults blow their minds—even just catching and releasing crabs or growing tomatoes from seeds is such a big thing for their brains to comprehend.Emma wears the Diamond Medusa Ring.

What was the most unexpected or surprising part of becoming a mother?
How hard it would be. That there are no days off. The list is endless but the pride you feel when you watch them play together is unimaginable.
Has motherhood shifted your perspective on life, career, or creativity?
1000%. We live in such a fast-paced, tech-heavy world, and as women go through their 20s, 30s and even into their 40s being independent and child-free, we are taught to believe we can continue leading our same busy lives when we go on have children. And unfortunately, that just isn’t usually true.
It's a new chapter. Having kids shifts everything in life, and careers do generally have to be reworked or adjusted. Creativity-wise, it’s easy to stall when you don't have the brain capacity. But it also opens up new opportunities for creativity, looking through the lens of your children. We just have to push forward and reward ourselves with the chance to tell a new story from a fresh perspective.Emma wears the Medusa Bangle, Emerald Suspense Bangle, Diamond Medusa Ring, Twin Medusa Ring and Medusa Ring.
“There are no days off. The list is endless but the pride you feel when you watch them play together is unimaginable.”
What’s the most rewarding part of being a mum? And the most challenging?
Watching him giggle at her truly fills my cup. The challenges are endless and the juggle is so real.
Can you recall a small but meaningful moment with Liv and Jacob that has stayed with you?
Swimming in the ocean together, one late afternoon at the end of this summer is a memory I will always cherish. So simple but so enjoyable…and one I look forward to enjoying forever to come.
