The Making Of MEDUSA

The Making Of MEDUSA

Discover the process and expert craftsmanship behind the impossible forms from SARAH & SEBASTIAN’s AURELIA collection, inspired by the voluminous silhouettes of jellyfish.

Underwater, everything is a question of perception and light. Our new AURELIA collection captures the essence of sea jellies' otherworldly forms, sculpting their fluidity into 18 karat gold pieces adorned with diamonds, lilac sapphires, and natural Australian opals.

While much of the AURELIA collection is crafted with opals to echo the iridescent beauty of sea jellies, the MEDUSA story takes on a different dimension, embodying the voluminous silhouettes of these ethereal creatures. Pulsing between monumental and refined, each design in this story stretches into impossible forms that glimmer with lightness.

INNOVATIONS IN CRAFTSMANSHIP

Embodying a delicate tension between solid and translucent, the Medusa pieces are expertly engineered to balance volume and weightlessness, their forms evocative of exoskeletons. Bold chokers, rings, and hoops are crafted with a distinctive framework of polished gold or silver beads, forming an interlaced structure.

The chokers are particularly unique in design, crafted from reticulating components seamlessly linked to allow for lifelike movement. "In the silver Medusa Choker, each row is individually riveted, resulting in this sense of fluidity that I love,” explains Creative Director Sarah Munro.

While sterling silver is traditionally alloyed with copper, which can be prone to tarnish, the Medusa story features a modern, high-quality silver alloy enriched with palladium known as AGPD. This innovative blend enhances durability, resists tarnish, and remains hypoallergenic, all while preserving the luminous lustre that makes silver so timeless.

“The Diamond Medusa Choker features invisibly riveted segments making it slightly more structured than its silver counterpart—an intricate, time-intensive process requiring countless hours of precise hand craftsmanship. Every rivet is also expertly concealed—hidden beneath diamonds or discreetly tucked under the metal, enabling movement throughout."

Bringing the Medusa Choker designs to life required numerous iterations, with a focus on perfecting both movement and structural integrity. “These unique forms were highly complex to craft,” Sarah continues. “The fluidity and rigidity evolved as more components were added, making it impossible to assess the final result until considerable progress had been made."

MEDUSA’S MASTERWORK

Adorned with natural white diamonds that appear to float in stillness, the Diamond Medusa Choker is a masterwork of the collection, taking weeks to design and handcraft in its entirety.

“We devoted a significant amount of time and effort to mapping out the diamonds,” explains Sarah. “We started with hand-drawn sketches, then visualised the design through CAD renders, followed by physical samples to refine the concept in three-dimensional form. We ended up incorporating 262 diamonds of varying sizes, carefully arranged across the piece to create a stunning scattered effect.”

The custom clasp was also carefully considered, designed to blend seamlessly into the choker’s framework, with the hinges and locks discreetly integrated into its pattern.
