Fantastical Sharks & Rays: A Celebration Of Art and Wildlife At The Australian Museum
Discover the ocean-inspired exhibition featuring a one-of-a-kind sculptural necklace by Sarah & Sebastian.
SARAH & SEBASTIAN was honoured to be invited by the Australian Marine Conservation Society (AMCS) to take part in their recent Fantastical Sharks & Rays exhibition—a convergence of art, education and community at the Australian Museum in Sydney.
On a mission to raise awareness around Australia's lesser-known and endangered shark and ray species, the AMCS and the Humane Society International Australia hosted a creative competition for budding young artists across the country. The task: to create an artwork inspired by one of these unique creatures.
Over 1,500 children entered the competition, and ten winners were selected for their outstanding portrayals. These drawings were then reimagined by some of Australia's most renowned artists and creatives, including Sarah & Sebastian, resulting in a vibrant showcase of artworks across disciplines.
One of the winning pieces selected by Sarah & Sebastian was created by thirteen-year-old Zara Pease from the Northern Territories, depicting a Lined Lantern Shark with blue and white speckles. Her drawing perfectly captured the deepwater shark's elongated body and distinctive features, including dotted and lined patterns that light up with bioluminescence in the depths of the ocean to trick its predators.
From Zara's unique interpretation, we designed a sculptural necklace with kinetic mechanisms that wrap and curl around the body, set with dozens of natural diamonds, topaz and apatite, as well as natural Australian opals for eyes and hand-cut red carnelian for fins.
Taking over 120 hours to make in its entirety, this piece was carefully handcrafted in our Sydney studio in sterling silver and finished with 18 karat gold black rhodium detailing.
Sarah & Sebastian is dedicated to the conservation of endangered shark and ray species, and the protection of the future of these precious creatures. Visit the Australian Museum in Sydney until Sunday 8th December to experience the exhibition, and discover Australia's unique and diverse shark and ray species that are in desperate need of our protection.
